PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD

CONCLUDING SESSION #" • The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland continued its deliberations yesterday afternoon, the Moderator (Rev. J. j. Cairncy) presiding. CHURCH ’FUNDS COMMITTEE. In connection with the overture from the Southland Presbytery which had been dealt with in the morning, tbe I lev., d. Kilpatrick moved that the committee consist of five members of the Dunedin Presbytery, with corresponding members in each .Presbytery, the members to be Messrs W. Cow, J. Dick, C. R. Russell, Dr Gumming (convener), and Rev. D. J). Smith, and the corresponding members, the Revs. J. Robertson, H. H. Barton, It D. M'Ewan, J. Chisholm, and A. Watson. Mr Chisholm moved as an amendment that the corresponding members be made members of the committee, and this amendment was carried. ’ NEW CLERK. On the motion of the Rev. J. D. Smith, seconded by the Rev. C. Miller, Dr Gumming was appointed to succeed the Rev. A. M. Finlayson as clerk of Synod from the end of the year. GRANTS. 'The' ('lunch Eact.or presented a list of grants passed for payment but so far not paid, and the Rev. J. Kilpatrick moved that all grants that were according to regulations be sanctioned. This was carried. SPECIAL GRANTS. A special grant of {,'-00 to the Green Island Church for church repairs was passed. GENERAL. In regard to the application by tbe Stewart Island Church to -sell sections, the proceeds to go tovaivls the budding of a manse, it was decided that tbe matter be referred vo tbe Southland Presbytery with synodical powers. Cromwell was granted leave to_ sell sections which were no longer required, tire proceeds to go to the congregation. Teviot was also granted leave to sell part of its glebe, the money to go to the congregation. The position of the Stirling manse was left in tbo bands of the Clutha Presbytery with synodical powers. Waikawa was given permission to sell the old manse and Imilet a new one, the church factor to be authorised to take stops to effect the sale. It was decided that the Revs. Kilpatrick, Cummings. Tiplor. Smith, Trotter, and Merrington, and Messrs Gow, Dick, Adams, and Fleming be reappointed the .Finance Committee. The report of a committee on the duties and powers of Synod was received, and the committee was thanked and discharged. It was resolved—-“ That the committee on Bills and Business consider the revision of Hie standing orders, mid i report to next Synod, 1 ' 'Mr J. Dick and Mr W H. Adams were added to the committee. The retiring Moderator (the Rev. J. Chisholm) was thanked for bis sermon, and for his services during the year. __ _ ; The Synod adjourned to meet again at Dunedin on Tuesday, March I, 1930
