LONG DISTANCE SWIM

A lung swim was undertaken on Sunday by C. Dudley, a member of the Wimngavei Swimming Club, when lie swam from Tangowahiue wharf to Uargaville wharf, on the Northern Wairoa 'River, a distance of about twelve miles (says a Press Association telegram). Dudley entered the water at Tangowahiue at 12.51, and completed the ’first mile in Kimin, and arrived at Dargaville at 3.53 p.m., having averaged four miles per hour, swimming with the tide, which flows fairly fast. The water was calm for the first two miles, hut for the rest of tho journey the swimmer encountered very cl. py water, especially over the last mile, when the water also became very cold, and made swimming fairly difficult The swimmer, however, finished fairly strong, and said that ho could have continued further should lie have so desired. The conditions with Urn tide running out were, however, all in favour of the swimmer, hut nevertheless the performance was a good one .and one of the longest ever successfully undertaken in tho dominion.
