DEATH PENALTY IN WAR Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, March 26. (Received March 27, at 1.15 p.m.) In the House of Commons Mr Baldwin said the Budget would be introduced on April 15. In committee, on tile Army Bill, Air R Morrison (Labour) moved a new clause substituting penal servitude, lor the death penalty for an act of cowardice MV J. H. Thomas (Labour) said; “ 1 defy anyone to distinguish between fear and cowardice in the atmosphere and circumstances of war service.”
Air A. Duff Cooper, replying, said the penalty must lie retained in the interests of discipline. Cowardice might spread panic, resulting in the loss of a battle.
The clause was rejected by 174 votes to 108.—Australian Press Association.
