Entries for the dairy produce section in the Waikato Winter Show number 954, a record for the dominion, being 101 ahead of last year. Fire swept nearly half of the Auckland City Council’s t!00 acres of. pine plantation at Waikumete yesterday, scorching or destroying about 400,000 young trees. The outbreak occurred about 10 o’clock in the morning whore burning off had been proceeding. \S ith a brisk wind immediately behind it, the fire quickly spread. A few men working in the vicinity made a fight to check the fire, but the dry ieru and scrub and grass, which was in places several feet high round the small trees, proved an irresistible fuel.
