Tlie term “commonwealth ” is generally regarded as synonymous with “ commonweal ” —a government in which the public has a direct voice. It was used in a special sense to denote the period in English history between the close of Charles I.’s reign in 1619 and the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. The federation of the Australian colonies in 1900 took the title “Commonwealth of Australia.” “ Your son is an actor, you say, Mr Wilkins ” “ Yus, sir, he is.” “And what roles does he fill?” “Rolls? Dunno! ’E ain’t said. 1 suppose ’e rolls up the curtain.”-
