The proclamation bringing into I'urce on July 1 the national origins quotas of the Restrictive Immigration Act was issued to-day hy President Hoover - . The clause ahnot doubles the number of immigrants 'allowed from Great Britain, Ireland, Austria and Belgium, but cuts sharply the quotas from Sweden and Norway. Lesser increases ■ire granted to Italy and several other Southern European countries, but decreases are ordered for Switzerland and other Northern European countries. The proclamation followed the decision of the Attorney-General (Mr Mitchell). President Hoover said that, although ho favoured restricted immigration, ho was opposed to the national origins provision, and he disliked the duty of issuing the proclamation. It is possible that Congress before July 1 will repeal the provisions of the Act.— Australian .Press Association-United i Service.
