MATCHES AGAINST H.M.S. DUNEDIN On Saturday afternoon two Association football games were played between local clubs and teams from the H.AI.S. Dunedin, a collection being taken tip at both matches for the benefit of flood relief funds, which will benefit to the extent of a little over £6. The first eleven from the ship met the Maori Hill team, last year’s winners of the local competition. In the first spell the • local side showed the better combination, but tho fine defensive play of the Navy team's centrehalf, Reid, and Hacket, goalkeeper, kept them from scoring until well on in the spell. Tho first goal follower! a niiskiclc by Varney, mm of the hacks, the ball travelling to the front of the goal,.whore Martin, gave the goalie no chance-at close quarters. Balk registered the second from a penalty kick, and the third was the result of a good cross shot by Oliver. Tlie Navy side went very close, to scoring on several occasions. Scott, Reid, and Rivers giving Callaghan, in goal, some difficult shots to contend with. Tim spell ended •j-0 in favour of Maori Mill.
Resuming after the interval the Navy team more than held their own, displaying a bettor understanding of each other's (day. The spectators witnessed some lively passing movements, which, however, broke down against the safe defence of the local team, until Wilkes, the right half, with a hard low drive beat Callaghan in goal. Shortly after Die same player followed with a similar shot, which on this occasion was well cleared by Callaghan. The Navy backs, Varney and Thatcher, shower! improved play as the game progressed, and it was oid.v towards the end of Die spell that a left wing attack ended in Balk, For the local side, netting the ball from a rebound following a shot hv Alartin. which had hit the upright. Tim second eleven met the Mornington Club foam at Atomington. The game was fast, and protirDd a good oxliibitiou of the round ball code. _On Die run of the play there was little between the teams, and the game ended with honours even, both sides scoring two goals each.
After the maHi Dio visitors were eutert'd'icd bv Dm Aforningtmt Club, when Mr J. Af. Blackie, on behalf of the local players, complimented the visitors on their fine play, and expressed Dio hope that they would again be able to meet them on the field on some future occasion.
