LAW STUDENTS

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION Mr A, W. Buckler presided at the animal meeting of the Law Faculty Students’ Association, some fifty members attending. The Chairman said he was pleased tobe able to congratulate the faculty on a very, successful year, during which the work of the association had been spread over a wjde field of activities. A very agreeable feature of tho year had been the marked interest shown by members of the profession in all matters affecting the welfare of- tho student body. After the annual report and balancesheet had been read and adopted, the business of electing officers lor the ensuing year was proceeded with. Mr W. IT. Carson was elected president of the association, and in his inaugural address he stated that he looked to everyone in* the faculty for wholehearted support to make the activities ol the association as successful as possible in every respect. The following officebearers were elected to act with Mr Carson:—Secretary, Mr J. T. Armstrong; treasurer, Mr P, Ritchie; capping representative, Mr G. flag ley ; social representative, Mr W. IT. Couston; debating representative, Air J. G. Warrington ; sports representative, Mr C. Stevens'; and first year representative, Mr Joel. Some discussion took place relating to the main social events of the association’s year, the ball and the dinner. When some finality had been readied in Dig discussion, the meeting was terminoted in order that the annual meeting of the Debating Society might be proceeded with.

Tlie retiring president (Mr C. M. Barnett) was in tlie chair, and presided over a meeting of some twenty-six members. Tlie report and balance-sheet "ore read and adopted, and disclosed tlie healthy- state of the society, both in regard to the work done last, year and in regard to finance. The attendances at all the meetings last year wen) highly satisfactory, and, as in previous years, this was in no small degree tlie result of the support given by the younger students. Tlie Chairman, in his remarks, stressed the great importance of debating in the life of the law student, sinre not. only m court, but in all other walks of his professional life, (he legal practitioner must have the ability to express himself clearly.

The following prizes were distributed:— Best speaker for Die year, Mr C. M. Barnett; second best speaker for the year. Messrs J. G. Warrington and R. If. Simpson (equal) ; best first year speaker. Mr P. Neville; impromptu speech competition, Mr J. T. Armstrong 1. Mr P. Nevilh 1?: winner of oratorical contest, Mr C. AT. Barnett, Special mention was made of Mr Shanahan's effort in the oratorical contest. 'Die thanks of (lie society wore extended to the various practitioners, who had presented prizes, judged debates, and speeches, or delivered lectures, and also to Mr M. Carson, who. although not a member of (lie profession, had generously donated a prize. The following office-bearers were elected for Die ensuing year;—President, Air J. G. 'Warrington; lion, secretary and treasurer. Mr J. W. Howorth: committee—Messrs T. C. Brookes. T. A. Arthur, C. Grav, and \V. A. M'Leod.
