ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
“Health.”—A cheap and excellent disinfectant is permanganate of potash, known popularly, I think, as “pink crystals.” Dilute a little in water, and use as wanted down the sink or drain pipes. If made very weak (a few drops in a glass of water) it makes a good mouth wash. “ Linen.”—With the line sunshine wo are now having you will bo able to whiten your linen. After washing it m the usual way hang it out, or, better still. Jay it out on the grass while still quite wet. Damp it as it dries, and in a few days you will find it a beautiful colour. “ Grease.”—Remove the grease spots from the coat by putting a piece of blotting paper over them and pressing with a hot iron. Repeat this several times with fresh blotting paper till the mark lias gone. A final clean may be given with a little benzine. “ .Lacquer.”—Never use anything gritty to (Jean lacquer, as, however well powdered, it wi(J leave minute scratches. A damp .doth is generally sufficient or a little benzine or turpentine. “ Salad.”—The usual French salad is made by breaking up lettuce leaves instead of cutting them. Just before serving—or, better still, at table—pour over the dressing made of two spoons (large or small as required) of best olive oil to one of vinegar, a little salt and pepper. The addition of chopped chives and other herbs is excellent. “ Picnic.” —If you wrap, your sandwiches in greaseproof paper first and then in cloth or other paper you will find that they keep quite fresh. If several kinds arc taken it is nsebd to write tho name on each packet. Now that lettuces are plentiful you would find one a welcome addition to bread and butter, not forgetting the salt!
