TRYING THEIR LUCK
FARM LABOUR AT AUCTION THREE THOUSAND FRANCS FOR GIRL SHEPHERD Press Association— By Telegraph—Copyright PARIS, December 26. (Received December 27, at 10.55 a.m.) Tho annual farm labour auction, held at Saint Etienne in accordance with ancient custom, illustrated forcibly France’s labour shortage, only a dozen farm labourers and shepherds were put on tho block, and there were eight bidders for every one offered. Girl shepherds hardly over thirteen brought 3,000 francs each for a year’s labour, plus two new dresses. Adult farm hands brought from 4,000 to 5,000 francs, with extra inducements.
Tho auction presented the usual colourful scene, tradition permits that every year, on tho day after Christmas, farm workers dissatisfied with their jobs may try their luck in tho market.—Australian Press Association.
