Mi - George Croof, Auckland manager of H. E. Shock-lock, Ltd., who has been on a visit to Dunedin, returned north this morning. Mr D. K. Torrance, jun., president of the Southland Rugby Football Union, is at present visiting Dunedin. The death occurred at Christchurch last evening of Air Samuel Ernest iU'Carthy, solicitor, of Christchurch. Mr M‘Carthy appeared to bo in Jus normal vigorous health until cpiito recently, but a few days ago entered a private hospital for an operation. He had a long career in law, and was well and honourably knoivn in many parts of New Zealand. He practised law at Naseby and Queenstown in his younger days in the profession, and was promoted to the magisterial bench in 1895, being first stationed at Clyde. Ho was transferred to Invercargill in 1900, and after a period of eight years there he went to Napier. He served also as stipendiary magistrate at Wellington, and later at Christchurch, until ho retired from the bench on pension four years ago. Being a man of active temperament, ho chose not to settle down to a life of ease, and he resumed the practice of law. Outside his profession Mr M'Carthy was perhas best known for his very active interest in the welfare "of the Church of England, of which lie was a lifelong member.—Christchurch correspondent. Latest visitors to the Excelsior Hotel are Mr T. G. Quiric (Wellington), Misses E. Jones and Irene Jones, Miami Mrs W. J. Hunter, Mr and Mrs G. E. Pearson, Messrs Pearson, E. E. Guthrie, and L. M. Guthrie (Christ, church), Misses Drake and M. Hodgson (Hamilton), Miss C. Tierney (Waihi), Hew arrivals to the Grand Hotel include Mr S. Murase (Tokio, Japan), Mr Charles Roger, Miss Dorothy Roger ('London), Dr Campbell Begg (Wellington).
