QUEENSTOWN NOTES

[FltO-U OUE OWN COKItnsrONDENT.J December 25. A change took place in the weather to-day, the great heat of the past few days giving way to cooler conditions. A light rain has fallen off and on this evening, and there has been a light breeze from the south. However, the barometer continues steady, so it is expected conditions will be favourable tomorrow for a commencement of the carnival revelry. The town is full of visitors.

To-day a. rinks malch was played on tho Tourist Department’s bowling green in the Gardens, when fifty-six bowlers, representing principally city clubs, look i part. Dunedin was there in large mini- 1 hers, and the honours went to T. Sau-j

tiers, of ilio Kaituna Club, Messrs T. Coull, H. Frapwcll, E. Tamblyn (all oi Dunedin), and P. 'lsrael (Invercargill) were even for second place. Tamblyn (Dunedin), and P. Israel (Invercargill) lied for second place. This lias yet to be played off. During Hie week Mr and Mrs Coll Macdonald, host and hostess of the Junction Hold at Arthur's*Point, were made a presentation in view of their departure from the district. The farewell social took place in the school, all parts of tho district being represented. Mrs Macdonald was given a travelling rug, and Mr Macdonald received a case of Loewe pipes, which tho chairman (Mr M'Mullau) said carried the good wishes of the donors for success iu their new home, wherever Hint might he. Regret was depressed that the guests of the eyoiiing were leaving the district, where they had done so much to hdp all social organisations. Mr and Mrs Macdonald, who have sold their hotel property to Mr

Padgett, of Invercargill, are both well known in Dunedin. Recently Mr J. P. M'Bridc, late proprietor of Kawarau Falls station, Lake Wakatipu, purchased a farm property about ten miles out of Waimate, arid he mid his family will be removing to Waimate township early next month. Roth Mr and Mrs M‘Bride have been prominent members of the Wakatipu Golf Club, so a 500 party was given in the Gardens Kiosk on Thursday evening in their honour. A presentation was also made them of a travelling rug by the members of tlie club. In handing them the gift Dr Anderson, president, expressed keen regret that the Stub was about to lose two such enthusiastic and valuable members. From every aspeet their departure would ho a distinct loss. Mr M'Hride, in replying, said that he and liis wife really felt they- had got much more out of (heir association with the club than they had put into it, and they were indeed sorry to bo severing

their connection with it, and with the many friends they had made. .Mi's H. Lordcn, who with her husband will shortly bo taking up residence in Dunedin, was presented at the week-end with a handbag and a panoramic view of Queenstown hy the members or St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild and P.W.AI.U. For years Mrs Lordcn has been a member of both these brandies of the Presbyterian Church's work in Queenstown, being also secretary of the ‘Harvest Field,’ the P.W.AI.U. (magazine. The presentation was made by Mr Jas. Davies, one of the oldest of the members, who paid a warm tribute to the faithful service Mrs Lordcn had rendered both organisations. The presentation took place in the Kowhai Tea Lounge, when there was a large gathering of church workers. There has been a good deal of sickness in the district during the past month, including not a few cases of pleurisy and pneumonia, so that the district medicoes have been kept fairly busy. Unhappily, in one instance death supervened on a serious attack of double pneumonia. The victim was Mrs Peter Hansen, wife of a wellknown district settler, and elder daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Bennett, of d] North road, North-east Valley. Mrs Hansen, who died last Thursday, leaves throe small children. She was only thirty-eight years of age. The Queenstown Borough Council has just concluded-the purchase of a Benanlt tire engine and pump, these replacing the old reel which lias done duty for n, great many years, and has become obsolete. The pump will prove a very valuable adjustment to the firefighting equipment, as water can be raised from the lake "or it can _be pumped direct from the town mains, A groat pressure can therefore lie brought to boar on a fire. Under the old system of hydrants the lead of water was comparatively poor. The council is to be commended on its enterprise, which mark's an important step in the town’s progress. Dr. and Mrs Irwin Hunter. Dunedin, and Miss Hunter have arrived in Queenstown for the holidays. Mr Justice Macgregor, of Wellington, and his wife and daughter are spending the holidays at Queenstown. Beid, manager of the Wellington branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is spending Christinas in this district, where he was born.
