The town clerk (Mr G. A. Lewin) has gone to Central Otago for the holi''ur W. Evans leaves for Pembroke to-morrow on holidays. Mr T. Urquhart Halligan, of this city, has passed his final pharmacy examination. Dr J. H. Crawshaw, district health officer fwr «w» a passenger by Saturday night’s train en route to Auckland.
A Svduey message states that Professor J. B. P.edeu, M.L.C., has been appointed President of the Legislative Council of New South Wales, in succession to the late Mr Fred Flowers. Professor Peden has an extensive equity practice and is dean of the faculty of law at the Sydney University. Mr G. J. Barton left to-day for Auckland to see his horses, Gold Tinge and Royal Flower, race at the Auckland Cup meeting. A London cable announces the death of Harry Butt, the cricketer. Latterly he was better known as a test match umpire. Major Robert F. Mitchell, late of this city and now of Wairarapa, is at present spending a holiday in Dunedin. He is accompanied by his son Stuart. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., of, Christchurch. leaves in March lor England, lie expects to be away about nine months.
Archdeacon George Mac Murray, who on Saturday celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination as a priest of the Church' of England, was the guest of honour at Auckland at a large social gathering in the evening. On behalf of the clergy, old parishioners, and friends generally, Archbishop Averill presented him with two line etchings of St. Mary’s Cathedral (of which lie was formerly vicar) and a cheque for 200 guineas. Mr Robert MTherson, who has been appointed manager of the New Zealand Wheat’Growers’ Association, which will control the Wheat Pool, has been with the firm of Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. for. eighteen or nineteen years. Ho joined the firm as a youth (says an Invercargill Press Association telegram). and for the past six or seven years has been in charge of the Invercargill branch. Ho left New Zealand with the Main Body, and served on Gallipoli, in Egypt, and in France with the New Zealand Artillery. His distinguished services earned him tho reward of the Military Cross. After the war he continued his connection with the Defence Forces, and for the past five years has been in command of the llth"Battery, Field Artillery, in Invercargill. At the present time he holds the rank of major, but lias passed the examination for promotion to lieuten-ant-colonel The Education Board has made the following appointments:—Miss Nellie M. Griffiths, probationer, Musselburgh; Mr F. Brownlie, head teacher, Dunback; Miss A. J. Ashton, sole teacher, Tuapeka West; Mr G. llarre, first assistant, Anderson’s- Bay; Miss E. 11. Grocott, ninth assistant, Macandrew Road. The death is announced of Major Nathaniel AVolfe at his residence, Merivale lane. Major Wolfe was very prominently connected with the Volunteer movement, to which Tor several years he devoted the whole of his spare time and energy. He was born at Bath, Somerset, in 1838, joined the Volunteer movement at its beginning in England, and took part in the first Volunteer review held at Hyde Park before Queen Victoria in 1860. He arrived by the ship Metropolis at Lyttelton in 1863, and commenced business in Christchurch as an engraver, continuing jt until five or six years ago. , For a long while lie was the only engraver in Canterbury. He at once joined the Volunteer Brigade in Christchurch,- and maintained active participation with the Volunteers for many years.—Christchurch correspondent. Among the recent arrivals to the City Hotel are Mr L. J. Donovan (Napier), Messrs W. Caldwell and A. E. Horsfall (New Plymouth), Mr J. Henry (Welliimton), Messrs E. Scan- and F. Gundy and Miss X. Brown (Christchurch), and Mr C. Hilton (Timaru). New visitors to the Excelsior Hotel include Mr and Mrs Messangcr (Loudon), Mr and Mrs H. A. Wake, Mrs E. Maliin, and Mrs CoricTi (Wellington), Mr, Mrs, and Miss Catherwood (Christchurch}, Mr "J. C. Gillespie Maryborough), and Mr A. Woodhcad (Tapaimi). The latest guests to the Grand Hotel include Mr T, L. Livingstone (London) Mr and Mrs R. E. Wood, Miss Natalie Wood (Melbourne), Miss Vahnai Wood (Perth), Mr and* Airs Cecil Wood (Christchurch), Mr L. K. Gienlic (Byrd expedition).
