SHIPPING WAR

CHALLENGE TO CUHARD COMPANY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. NKW YORK, December 22. Tlio United States Shipping Board lias declared open war on the attempt of the Cunard Lino to cut into the hitherto unbroken • American monopoly of a direct steamship route between New York and Havana with its 20,000ton liner Caronin. The board has assigned . the 14,000-ton United States liner President Roosevelt to bo run in competition with the Caronia this winter. The chairman (Mr T. V. O’Connor) of the Shipping Board said: “The board is prepared to sustain a consider- ■ able loss in order to drive the Cunard Line out of a trade which it considers 'is peculiarly American.”,' All the American lines now in this trade will probably suffer somewhat through the addition of two large and fast steamers to the route.—Australian Press Association.
