Faciiot, a judge of the Supreme Court, pulled out a revolver, fired three shots, and then bowed to Madame Faciiot, who had thrown herself on her knees beside her fallen husband. On his way to the street the stranger encountered ' a tenant below, who asked him if he had heard shots. .He replied coolly. “Yes, someone must have committed suicide, i am in a, hurry.” He later surrendered to the police, giving his name as George Benoit. lie confessed that his motive was revenge, M. Faciiot having been the public prosecutor in Alace in the treason trials early in the year.. The judge was seriously wounded in the abdomen.—Australian Press Association. (Received January 24, at 1 a.m.) The Government lias promoted M. Faehot from ;in officer of the Legion of Honour to be a commander. M. Faciiot is better, but he is still dangerously ill. M. (Received December 24, at 1 a.m.) According to the ' Daily Mail,’ it is feared that the incident may be the beginning of a terrorist campaign on the part of the Home Rule extremists. At Colmant (Alsace), the unrest has caused a new electoral campaign, while German money is coining forward to aid in all ways the efforts of the Alsatian autonomists. There much agitation against the Central Government in Paris. It has a religions foundation, for Southern Alsace is intensely Catholic. The priests oppose the French Government on the ground that a majority of the deputies and civil servants imposed on Alsace arc antiChristian.—United Service.
