HILLSIDE WORKSHOPS APPRENTICES’ CLASSES

THE PRIZE GIVING On Thursday afternoon tho apprentices of Hillside workshops and tho maintenance branch, Dunedin, assembled in the apprentice class instruction room for the first annual presentation of prir.es. Mr C. J. Graham (workshops manager), Mr G. E. Baird (general loroman), tho foremeu of all departments, and representatives of tho Tradesmen’s Association ami A.S.R.S. wci;o present The following prizes awarded wero presented by Mr Graham: —Grade 1, Apprentice litter 11. Kennedy; grade J, apprentice Jitter J. R. R. M'Farlane. Both the prizes to the above lads were presented by the Tradesmen’s Association. . A. 11. O’Sullivan, apprentice boilermaker, was awarded tho manager’s prize for (the boy making most improvement during the year. A special prize, donated by apprentice instructor D. J. Sherrill, was awarded to apprentice turner C. J. Knox for improvement. Apprentice turner B. T. M'Donald received Mr F. Bonifant’s special prize, and special prizes donated by Mr .1. Newlands and Mr W. Sullivan were awarded to apprentice coppersmith A. G. Hibbard and apprentice carpenter Stanley respectively. Before presenting tho prizes Mr Graham referred to the good results obtained from tho year’s instruction, which reflected credit on the apprentices themselves and on their instructor. Mr D. J. SherriiT. The institution bv tho department of apprentice classes', at which the apprentices received instruction tree of cost in the department’s time, appears to hav« been justified, and present-day apprentices are fortunate in getting such terms. , „ Mr A. W. Triggs spoke on behalf or tho Tradesmen’s Association, and Mr S. W. Gasjier on behalf of the A.S.R.S. The trend of all the speakers’ remarks was to eulogise the value of apprentice instruction and the capabilities of Hillside instructor, Mr Sherriff.
