PAINTERS’ AWARD
[Peh United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, December 19. The dominion painters’ award has been filed by tho Arbitration Court. In a memorandum Mr Justice Frazer states: “The court has settled the provisions relating to wages, ship work, and exemptions, reserving the power in the two kilter cases to amend the award on application being made lor that purpose.” Mr Monteith dissents from the opinion of the majority of the court on tho matter of wages. Ho considers that some additional payment to outside workers should be awarded, as in the case of carpenters. In other rcspeqts the award follows the recommendations of the Conciliation Council, which the parties agreed to accept. It provide* for a 44-hour week. Tho minimum rato of wages for journeymen painters, paperhangers, glaziers, grainers, sigmvritors, decorators, and pictorial sign painters is 2s 3d per hour. The award is to operate throughout Northern Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland industrial district;*, but not within the Gisborne judicial district.
