After a ton days’ holiday tour of the northern coast, during which three days were spent camping on tho Three Kings, Lady Alice Fcrgusson and party returned to Onehunga by the Government steamer Tutanekai yesterday afternoon. Fine weathor conditions woro experienced throughout tho trip, and the holiday proved most enjoyable.—Press Association. At tho annual meeting of the Dunedin Stock Exchange yesterday afternoon a presentation of a case of pipes was made to tho retiring chairman (Air Harman Reeves), tho presentation being made by Air J. A. Haggitt, who referred to the services given by Air Reeves as chairman, and moved that ho bo accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his untiring energy during tho last twelve month. Tho speaker said that members felt they could not let Mr Reeves retire from office without somo tangible expression of their appreciation. Congratulatory reference to. the recent appointments of the Hon. W. B. Taverner and Hon. T. K. Sidoy to tho Cabinet was made at last night's meeting of tho Otago Amateur Athletic Centre, of which both are patrons. It was decided to forward letters of congratulations to Mr Taverner and Mr Sidey. Mr J. B. Smith went north this morning for a holiday trip to Sydney. Mr G. Lowrie was a passenger for Auckland by the 11.34 train to-day.
After the Dunedin Choral Society’s practice last evening, Dr V. E. Galway, on behalf of the society, presented Mr 11. P. Desmoulins with a silver-mounted conductor's baton and a leather case in recognition of the work ho has done for the society as chorus master. Out of a largo number of applicants, Mr A. C. Logan, 8.A., has been appointed assistant master in the secondary department, at John M’Glashan College. He was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, and has had a distinguished career at Otago University. At yesterday’s meeting of the Dunedin Eire Board it was decided to forward congratulations to the Hon. W. B. Taverner on his appointment as Minister of Railways. Air Taverner is a member of the board.
A large gathering of officers of the Bank of New Zealand from all parts of the dominion assembled in the board room, Wellington, yesterday, when Mr Buckleton, general manager, who attained his fiftieth year of service with the bank on Saturday, was presented with a portrait iu oils, painted by Mr A. Nicoll, and a pearl tiepin. Mrs Buckleton, who was present, was presented with a toilet set of brushes in enamel. Testimony was born to Mr Buckleton’s ability and high sense of duty. A replica of the portrait is to hang in the board room. In the course of his reply Mr Buckleton said the board and executive were only too glad to give their officers every opportunity of qualifying for the high positions. He stressed the importance of the technical training of bank officers. —Press Association. A farewell social was tendered Mr Walter Gallick and Miss E. Gallick by the members of the Mosgiel Baptist Church in the Church Hall. Associated with the members of the church were representative officers and members of the Loyal Mosgjel Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F. Mr Alox. Bridges occupied the chair. P.N.G. Bro. W. Craig presented Bro. Gallick with a Rolls razor and outfit, on behalf of the lodge. He stated that Brother Gallick was one of the foundation members of the lodge, having been a member for fory-nino years. P.N.G. Bro. R. Wylie supplemented Bro. Craig’s remarks in a happy speech. Mr Bridges, in presenting Mr Gallick with a Morris chair, on behalf of the church, referred to his fine record as an officer, and as a member of the choir Miss Gallick was tho recipient of a number of the Rev. E. W. Boreham’s books. In making the presentation, Mr Bridges referred to her fine record as a former organist of the church. . The citizens of Mosgiel and tho surrounding district tendered a farewell social to Constable and Mrs Findlay, on the occasion of tho retirement of tho former from the Police Force. Mr Findlay had acted as “ guardian of tho peace ” in Mosgiel for eighteen years, and was held in very high esteem by the local people. An illuminated address and a well-filled purse were handed to Mr Findlay, and a comfortable easy chair to Mrs Findlay. The mayor (Mr Walls), who presided, made the presentations. Cr J. W. Blair (chairman, Taieri County Council), supported the chairman Complimentary speeches were made by Senior-sergeant Quarterraain and Mr A. Riach (an old family friend). An excellent programme was rendered by the Municipal Band, Mrs M’Keagg, Misses Logan, Southgate, and Belcher, Master Frew, and Messrs Logan and M’Dowall.
The latest visitors to the Grand Hotel include Mr C. E. Hope (London), Mr W. P. Gregory (Melbourne), Messrs A. J. Wynne, J. Coates, K. R. Norman, and A. Hall (Wellington), Mr A. Bajnkin (Christchurch), Mr A. I/. Pratt (Gore), Mr E. T. Shand (Kokonga).
