CORNWELL CUP
POSITION Of LOCAL CLOB LETTER TO YACHT ASSOCIATION The committee of the North-east Harbour Boating Club has asked us to publish the following letter, which was sent to the president and members of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association last week:— 1 have the honour to forward for the perusal of your association the following resolution passed at a special general meeting of the North-east Harbour Boating Club held on Saturday, the Bth inst., to discuss the attitude of this club towards the Cornwell Cup contest, as• follows “That this meeting of members of the North-east Harbour Boating Club endorses the action of its committee in its protests to the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association, and respectfully requests the association to again reconsider its decision in the matter of not challenging for the Cornwall Cup contest, and asks the association to endorse the challenge, which has already been forwarded by the club to the Takapuna Boating Club.” In forwarding this resolution we wish to make it very definitely clear that it is neither our intention nor desire to run counter to the wishes of your association in the matter of a challenge, nor to detract from the attitude you have adopted in connection with the unjust treatment meted out to Otago’s representatives last year. This committee has every reason to support your association wholeheartedly in protesting against the conditions which made such au unfair decision possible, but feels that the province is losing a golden opportunity of having matters adjusted by not having its representative# on the Sailing Committee for the contest this year. As this club has a crew who are willing to compete, and the only Takapuna class boats locally on its register,' and seeing also that some of its members are prepared to relieve the association of all financial responsibility in connection with the representation at the contest, we feel that as a committee we would be doing less than our duty in not giving our lads the opportunity and honour of contesting the issue with representatives of other provinces. At a meeting of your association earlier in the year it was decided that, although no challenge would be issued officially by the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association, no objection would be raised to any individual club doing bo. This gave us reason to hope that a challenge issued by the N.E.H.8.0. would be endorsed by the association without its being officially regarded a# a provincial matter. The date of acceptance having drawn very close while our club was still corresponding with you on the matter, it was necessary for us to issue our challenge, in the earnest hope that your association would eventually endorse it, and by doing so place our challenge in order. May we once more affirm our loyalty to your association and our belief that our attitude to-day is dictated by our desire to do what we consider to bo a duty to tho sport of yachting. Our club respectfully requests that you again give our application further and favourable consideration, and asks that our challenge receive your endorsement. Finally, we would also respectfully, ask that your association forward a copy of this letter to all your clubs, in order that they may bo fully conversant with our views on the matter of a challenge for tho contest.
