BURKES-ST. LEONARDS DISTRICT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I do mot know who is the proper person or body to hold up to condemnation for the deplorable condition of the grass-grown footpaths in this district. If the authorities expect the district to develop and attract residents I am afraid the countrified appearance of tho footpaths will not assist to this end. I will simply put possible residents against tho place. Nobody seems to care or bother, and the result will be, in a few weeks, that thistle seeds will be floating everywhere. The railway people, usually dubbed as slow in the uptake, have recognised the wisdom of cutting the grass alongside of the railway line before the seeds ripen. Not so the West Harbour Borough Council, ft is to be hoped our’councillors will give the matter their immediate attention. What do we elect them for? It will never do to leave the footpaths in the state they are in over Christinas, as it will give the place a bad name to visitors. And while they are on tho job, will they get some shingle put on the footpaths, for in wet weather they are very wet and disagreeable ? lam commencing to wonder what we pay our rates for when we cannot even get these small, inexpensive items attended to by tho authorities without having to-use your columns.—l am, etc., Ratepayer. December 15.
