Douglas Arthur Fletcher Brewer, ! aged thirty-two, was sentenced at Wel- ; lington to twelve months’ reformative detention on a charge of obtaining petrol by false pretences, and was convicted and discharged on another charge. It was stated that ho had been employed at a service station. He had opened accounts at five different banks and had deposited small amounts, and had been issuing valueless cheques. The magistrate said the offences showed that Brewer was following a system, and he had indulged in the same thing on several previous occasions.—Press Association, With a list of eight previous convictions, James Sadler, aged forty-three, a hairdresser, ploadecT guilty at Wellington to the theft of £lB 7s 6d, belonging to William H. Corneal. The accused was found in Corneal’s house. He had been intermittently employed by Corneal, and was allowed to go after an explanation, but later it was found that a cabinet had been broken into and the money stolen. Questions relating to contributions, both in money and goods, were fully dealt with, and, taking into consideration the fact that Brighton .property owners and ethers interested in the advancement of that popular seaside resort have already been circularised, it was generally felt that considerable support would eventuate. With present arrangements in hand the public has no reason to doubt a very enjoyable three days at Brighton on December 81 and January 1 and 2.
