MUNICIPAL MARKET

HIGH HOPES DASHED (Spkoxai. to rax * Stas.'l OHRISTCHDRCH, December !?. Established a year ago during the height of the Christmas shopping rash, the municipal market in Worcester street, which was designed to bring growers and consumers into direct touch, has failed to fulfil the high hopes of the Labour members of the City Council. From the Labour point of view the most unsatisfactory feature of the present market is the lack of support it is receiving from the growers, in whoso interests it was primarily established. The majority of the occupied stalls in the market had been taken by retailers as distinct from growers, and their prices do not vary, a great deal from those charged in city shops. Labour councillors are now engaged in a campaign among grpwers, with a view to inducing them to support the market. If there are any indications of satisfactory support being forthcoming, it is probable chat within the next couple of months proposals will be launched by the City Council for the establishment of-a large new market and cool store on a more suitable site than the one now being used. In the event of insufficient support being promised by the growers, it is _ not unlikely that the whole scheme will be abandoned and the existing temporary market closed.
