DUNEDIN V. ALBION
On a wicket still sodden after the recent rains Albion resumed its innings against Dunedin at Logan Dark. McDonald and Simmers carried on against, tire bowling of Torrance and' McGregor. For a time the batsmen were care-, ful, but it was not long before M'Don'al'l got into his striae, and scored freely ail around the wicket. On several occasions he found the leg boundary without apparent effort. Simmers was quieter, and batted soundly until, when 14, he was bowled by Torrance. 42—2—14. Shepherd, the incomer, had a short stay at the crease, Torrance ticking off his third victim by getting him Ibw. 46—3—2. Barron’s score gave promise of mounting rapidly, a 3 and 4 coming from his hat before he had been long at the crease. When only 8, however, he popped Cavanagh out into the hands of Kenny at point. 57—4—g, Binney joined M'Donald, who, incidentally, struck a weak patch when facing Cavanagh, the Dunedin bowler putting the brake on his profress by pitching to the off. Ultimately [‘Donald had a go at an off ball; and Torrance held a good catch at mid-off. 75—5—47. Duncan, the next man in, had scored only a single, when he hit a ball from Monk back into the hands of the bowler. It was a forceful stroke, but Monk made no mistake. 84—6—1, Riach fell a victim to Cavanagh and Ritchie, the latter taking a splendid low catch in the slips. 85—7—1. W. yorrath went out to bat for the first time this season, and was accorded an ovation. He and Binney carried the score to 91, at which stage the latter lifted Monk into the hands of Strang. 91—8—8. In spite of his lack of practice, Vorrath was shaping well, but when he had notched only 5 Monk dismissed him with a nice ball, which rattled the stumps. 99—9—5. M'Callum brought into action some punishing strokes, and his form was quite promising until he got his leg in front to M'Gregor. 101—10—5. Silver carried his bat for a Couple. Dunedin thus secured a two-point win on the first inings. Cavanagh and Monk opened the ; second innings for Dunedin,"the bowlers being Allen and Duncan. Monk at once began to rattle up the runs, but before he had reached 10 ho was missed off each bowler. Cav'anagh was playing vigorously, but soundly, and after half an hour’s batting the score stood at 60, Monk was run- out at 26, and M'Gregor, who was next in, was caught by Allen off Shepherd. Cavanagh was going well; when Duncan, at : mid-off, succeeded.in holding a hard drive from his bat. When stumps were drawn the score was 126 for five wickets.
