PENINSULA SHOW

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION HIGH GLASS OF ENTRIES The .fifty-first show of the Otago Peninsula A. and P. Society was held at Fortobello on Saturday in fine weather. Thanks’to the good organisation and preparatory work of the officials, it was a very successful function. The attendance was most satisfactory, being equal to that of last year, which _ was a special occasion. In most sections, too, the .entries were largo, though the sheep section was very disappointing. Tlio judging was commenced punctually at the scheduled hour, and the judges and stewards are to be complimented ou the manner in which they performed their work. In this connection a number of the senior boys of the Portobello School acted as junior stewards, and they were most helpful in mustering the entrants. _ The experience they gained on this occasion , ill prove of great benefit to themselves and the society in later years. _ The judges, generally, were loud in the praises of the quality of the entries. Mr F. Driver, _ who judged fho draughts, was specially delighted, stating that tho horses were some of the finest ho had ever seen at any country show. Tho dry mares were particularly good, and nothing finer could he found anywhere. According to tho judge, Mr E. J. Docherty, the Peninsula is to bo congratulated on having such a high type of roadster stallion as Dcsbrough, which is by Logan Pointer, out of Lily F., travelling in the district. Sirs T. D. Dalziel’s hack Chrysler, which won the champion’s ribbon, was a very fine horse. Tho Albany Street School brass band was in attendance, and rendered selections during tho, afternoon. DRAUGHT HORSES. Mr Driver said that in this section, there wore some of the finest horses ho had ever seen at any country show, especially the dry mares. The mare that won first prize last year was put second on this occasion. The winning mare was an excellent animal, but tho second was a little low in condition. Tho winner would ho a hard mare to beat at any show. There were very few harness horses, but those that wore shown were quite good. The spring-carb horse entry was small, but the quality was good. Tho loewt and one ton class were also good- The championship in the female class was won by Mr R. Henderson, with a mare that, had won prizes at several shows. j-.-.; ■ HACKS. • Judge:'Mi' E. J. JUDGE’S COMMENTS. According to Mr Docherty, the entries were good in most classes, and they were a very useful lot. The champion roadster stallion Desborough was of a very high class. Tho winner of the brood mare was also worthy of special mention. The list and list weight-carrying hacks were of a very high standard, and the dog-cart horse was also good, hut there was only one entry. SHORTHORNS. Judge: Mr J. Lament. JUDGE’S COAIAIENTS. The judge said that tho male champion, Air J. Aitken’s Townhoad- Sir Hector was an outstanding sire, showing strong constitution and good dairy quality. Ho is by Sir William of Inglewood, ono of tho most prepotent sires in New Zealand, and belonged to the late Air A. Gillies, of Hampden, a familiar figure in all South Island shows. The two aged bulls would hold their own in any show in Otago. The females were a fine lot, Air J, AVeir’s champion cow being a credit to him. Among tho younger classes the heifers would compare quite favourably with the best company. Taking tho Ayrshires all round, there were some outstanding animals that were a credit to the district.
