CYCLING FESTICAL

Saturday next will witness one of the biggest athletic and cycling carnivals ever held in Dunedin, when the Otago Amateur Cycling Club will stage its annual afternoon meeting at the Caledonian Ground. Exceptionally large entries have been received for tho cycling events, and such well-known riders as J. 0. Fogarty, S. Bremford, C. Lucas, Janies (tho ex-Wellington representative), S. Hedge (the brilliant Christchurch sprinter), and Traill will be taking part. The running events have also drawn splendid entries, and the mile handicap in particular is expected to provide one of the best races seen hero for a very long tiine, the scratch men including Lachie M'Lachlan, J. G. Barnes, L. Wood, and J. J. Morris, as brilliant a quartet as has been seen in Dunedin for years. The novelty relay—a man, a maid, and a bike—should provide a good deal of amusement. The cycling races will ho the main feature of the programme. All will watch the performance of J. C. Fogarty, who, off a short mark, recently beat the New Zealand champion, F. J. Grosso. In the three-mile race, for which a fine medal is offered to the winner, Fogarty has to concede 4.loyds. It is noteworthy that he is giving away a bigger start than did Ptanden and Gray, the Australian Olvmpic representatives who last year tcnred the dominion.
