LADIES’ BOWLING

TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED A'csterday saw the finals in the ladies’ bowling tournament played on the North-east Valley green. The weather was ideal, and a fair number of spectators (including one or two who have won dominion of New Zealand championship honors) were present. Results;—

DOUBLES COMPETITION —Semi-final.—

Mesdames Fergusson and Burnside (Leith) 20 beat Mesdames AVright and Marshall (North-east Valley) 17. Up to the seventh head the game was evenly contested, the scores reading G all. Mrs Marshall here established a strong lead, and at the fourteenth head the score was 17 to 7 in her favor. Mrs Burnside at this stage appeared to bo hopelessly out of it, but succeeded in making a Wonderful • recovery," bringing’hot* score to 17“ all Withe last head. A deciding head had to be played, on which Mrs Burnside scored a if, and thus qualified for the final in a rather sensational fashion. —Final.—

Mesdames Fergussou and Burnside f Leith) 17 beat Mesdames Marshall and APNamnra (Balelutha) IG. A great deal of interest centred in this game, and it was the general opinion that Mrs MLNnmara (who skipped the winning double at last year’s tournament) would again prevail. Those who had witnessed the solid play of Airs Burnside in her uphill fight in the semi-final, however, were prepared to see the Balelutha pair extended to the limit. The Balelutha players opened the scoring, and at the second end wore 6-0. At the seventh end Leith, by skilful play, had drawn level, 7 all. From the seventh to the sixteenth head the piny all round was of a very high order, and shot after shot was continually altering the situation. Neither side could establish a working load, and at the sixteenth head the score read 16 all. .On the seventeenth head Balelutha scored one, only to he crpialled again on the eighteenth by Leith—l4 all. Leith got a single on the nineteenth head, and led 15-14. but on the twentieth head Balelutha notched 2, and with the Inst end to go were 1 no, 16-15. The last end saw Leith lead with two good shots a foot from kitty when the skips crossed over, and Mrs APNamara had to draw a specially good howl to win. This she just failed to do with her last bowl, which left Leith finally victorious by one shot. It was a hard tussle from start to finish, and, although the Balelutha pair (who have mode themselves extremely popular with all Dunedin howlers) played a sterling game, they went down in a game w hid i will long he remembered for the play of Mrs Burnside, who extricated herself when in difficulties time and again with wonderfully accurate shots. SINGLES COMPETITION. —Final.— Mrs Jones (St. Kilda) 11) beat Mrs Stnbloy (Anderson’s Bay) 9. This was a runaway game, Mrs Jones being on her best game, and her opponent retired on the nineteenth head when her chance of winning had disappeared. PINKS COMPETITION, —Final.— ■ Me»cl ames Higgisou, Duthic, Easton, and Alexander (Dunedin) 2.'3 beat Mesdames Wright. Campbell, Rigby, and Gray (North-east Valley) 7. Up to the seventh bend in the game play was very even, the score rending 5 all. The players were finding a difficulty in ganging the green. The Dunedin team was first to strike form, and playing with great combination the players permitted their opponents to score again on only two occasions, gaining a runaway win by 23 to 7. The Dunedin players scored a very popular win, and their opponents, right through the tournament, found them consistently good players. THANKS. All those who had assisted in the management of the tournament, which had been conducted from start to finish without the semblance of a hi tell, were thanked by Airs Hutchison. Thanks were also extended to the North-east Valley, St. Kilda, and Caversham Clubs for the generous use of their greens, and to the umpires and, greenkeepers, who had each day prepared excellent rinks on which to play.
