LEAP FOR LIFE
BOARDERS TRAPPED IN FIRE [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 29. A two-storied wooden boarding house known as Edenville, and situated in Eden crescent, was gutted completely by fire at an early hour this morning. The building contained twenty rooms, and eight boarders in the upper portion were trapped and had to leap from tire balcony to save their lives. John Trbuhomitch, aged forty-four, sustained a broken tibia, and W. P. M'Pherson severe burns to his arms and neck. One of those who jumped safely was a young lady. Mrs Stone, the proprietress of the . establishment, four members of her family, and two boards downstairs escaped safely as soon as the alarm was given by, one of the boarders at 2 a.m. Ho aroused the other occupants, most of whom left the building in their night attire.
The building was owned by Grey and Menzies, Ltd., and was insured for £1,900; Mrs Stone’s furniture, etc., for £SOO.
