SCOUT NOTES

The first Scout rally for 1928 was held on Saturday afternoon last. The participating troops had been divided into two parties—defenders and attackers, each party’s positions and movements being unknown to the other. The defenders were placed round Chisholm Park, which was the objective of the attackers. At the end of the gamo it was found that the defence -ad been well maintained. Two other games—stalking and bombing—were greatly enjoyed, the surrounding country proving ideal for the various scouting activities. The next event was the presentation of the “Peace Flag,” for which purpose the rally was held. The competition was judged on the year’s work, and points gained in the various cup competitions. signalling, pioneering, ambulance, etc., which were held. The Ocean Beach Troop were the winners, and in presenting the Hag, Rover Chaplain Morton congratulated tho troop, the committee, and the scooter ontheir achievement. In tho course of his remarks Mr Morton said that tho term “Peace” appealed to him. He quoted an inspiring message delivered by His Majesty the King to British children. Three cheers were given for the winners.

After tea a camp fire was held, items being given by each troop. Several selections on a gramophone, bought by the Ocean Beach Committee, were appreciated. The parade afterwards marched to the Ocean Beach Scout hall and dismissed. The parade was in charge of District Scout Master Moore. Hon. D. S. M. Pirrelt was also present.

Taking advantage of the period of daylight saving still remaining, tile Ist Dunedin (Rover) Troop paraded at Roy’s Gully on Tuesday evening last. Outdoor tracking, scouting games, etc., formed tho programme. An outing for Saturday. March 10. has been planned. Particulars will bo given next parade. The Ist Dunedin (Rosiyn) Troop held its usual parade at headquarters, Maori Hill, on Friday last, under A.S.M. M'Morran. After inspection the boys h ’. a round-tlie-tabie talk on how tho troop is to be managed during the coming months. Mr Paterson, district secretary (Troop Committee chairman) visited, and expressed his regret at losing so many of tho old boys. Ho was pleased that they were joining the Rovers, and were still going to carry on in the movement. Afterwards the boys had a “tidying up” of tho hall. Games wore then played for the remainder of the evening. The troop was dismissed at 9 p.m. The 4th (North Dunedin) Troop paraded at its headquarters on Friday night. After tho new scouter, Mr Phelan, had been introduced, the troop practised tenderfoot, second class, pioneering. and work for the fireman’s badge. Boxing and games were played before the boys dismissed, shortly after 9 p.m.

Instead of the usual weekly parade, the sth (Dunedin) Ocean Beach 'Troop paraded at Chisholm Park at 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon for the field day parade. About ten troops were present for tlie parade. .There, was a game of Atlackers and Defenders, tiiis _ being won by the Defenders by 195 points to 135. A game of Stalking wa.s also carried out, this being won by two troops, who were equal. Then came a loot game, the side with most number of scarves winning. The troops with their sleeves up won. After delivering his address the Rev. Morcton presented (ho Peace Flag to tho guard of the Ocean Beach Troop. A jolly camp fire was held after tea. A tired but happy contingent of Scouts returned homo after a good afternoon’s outing. A rearrangement of tho patrols formed the first part of the parade of the 9th Dunedin .Mohicans on Thursday evening. Semaphore signalling en masse then followed. One boy passed his tenderfoot, games being played for the. rejpiaindcr of the evening. A Leaders’ Court of Honor was held, matters connected with the patrols being discussed. Tho monthly meeting of Hie Troop Committee was also held, general business and the appointing of delegates for the queen carnival forming the business.

The lOtli Dunedin (Green Island) Troop paraded on Friday night. After inspection by the Scooter tlio patrols settled down to.work under their leaders. The Badgers carried out Morse signalling, second class work; tho Tigers second class work and both codes of signalling; the Buffaloes pioneering and tenderl oot work: tho Panthers tenderfoot work and signalling. A few games were indulged in, and after repeating the promise tho troop was dismissed. Promotions made at tho start of the year’s work are; To Patrol Leader, Seconds Sloan and MThail; to Seconds, Scouts Trower and Bulger. On Saturday the troop took part in the district parade to Chisholm Park for tho presentation to Ocean Beach of tho -Peace Flag. Though only a few turned up, they had a good time, and look forward to having another day. Ou Tuesday evening the Koslyn Leopard Pack held n meeting at its head(juaiters, Maori Hill, when eighteen answered tho roil call. The pack was then divided into tho following four sections:—Tender Pad, First Star, Second Star, and Signaller’s Budge. Later in the evening Cubbcr Cuthberi was welcomed by the grand howl. Tho remainder of the evening until 8.30 was spent in games, after which the meeting closed. The Ocean Beach Lion Pack held its final parade on Saturday, when an outing was held with the Mosgiel Pack. Both packs enjoyed themselves at swimming, running, and club games. Tho Mosgiel Cubbers treated the Cubs to ico cream. The Lion Pack has now disbanded. The Cubs of Scout age, together with the older Cubs of the Ocean Beach Baloo Pack, are being formed into tho Ocean Beach Lion Troop, with D.C.M. Dorman as Scouter and Cubbers W. Sheppard and Mrs Dorman as assistants. Tno new troop will parade ou .Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. The Cubbers’ monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, 28th inst., at 8 p.m. All Cubbers and assistants are asked to be present. On Wednesday evening the Ocean Beach Lion Pack gave a display of cubbing in Gladstone Church, Pine Hijf, with tho object of enlisting supporters for the local pack. Following the Cub display individual items were contributed by D.C.M. Dorman (paper-tear-ing), Scout Duncan Todd (recitations;, and Cub Eric Johnson (song). Commissioner Meek addressed tho meeting upon the committee’s duties, etc., and assisted in the formation of a committee. Mr Sam Law was appointed Cubmaster, with Mr Jas. Precde.as assistant. Tho pack is to be known ns the Gladstone Pack (colors royal blue with green border)/
