Mr J. M. .Dickson, M.P., is on Ids way to Wellington, having Jolt by the through express to-day. 'Mr T. Du Spong went north this morning to embark on the Maungamu for Australia.
Mr J. Elvidgo ('Hal tray and Son! loft for Wellington by the 11.34 train to-day. Mr Alex. MT’herson, of Invercargill, Paine to Dunedin by this morning’s express. Messrs A. Smellie, H. Guthrie, and W. It. Brown went off this morning for Palmerston North to attend the Rotary conference.
Mr F. J. Stuckey (senior inspector of Otago), Mr J. Robertson (senior inspector of Southland), and Mr R. Hunter (Southland) left Dunedin this morning for tho conloronec ol primary ecliool inspectors at Wellington. Mr W. T. Hazlctt camo from Invercargill this morning on a business visit. Mr J. 11. Luxford. a well-known and popular member of the Auckland Bar, has been appointed a stipendiary magistrate. It is not yet known in which centre he will be stationed. Mr Luxford was born at Palmerston North in 1890, being the youngest son of Mr W. L. huxford, now of Mount Albert. J 1 o has had a. distinguished career as an athlete, and his war rcciril is extremely creditable, for ho was specially mentioned in dospatones from France by Field-Marshal Earl Haig.
fn respect to the death of Mr Charles Speight, the Rod Cross Committee is in receipt of the following telegram from Red Cross headquarters:—‘ Profoundly sorry to learn of passing away of Air Charles Speight. Great loss to our cause. Please convey sincere condolence to the bereaved. 1 ” A very enjoyable evening in the form of a ‘‘ surprise party ” was tendered to Mr and Mrs John Massey, of Bush road, Mosgiel. by many friends on the occasion of their silver wedding. Tho function was held in tho refectory of the .Masonic Hall. Mr William Blaekie was m the chair, Mrs. Massey was presented with a silver teapot, and Mr Mafesoy with a silver cigarette case. Dancing concluded a most enjoyable evening.
A well-know ii Ashburton resident. Mr Herbert Clement Orbell, died at Oakhurst Private Hospital, Ashburton, on Friday morning after a Ion" period of bad health. Horn at Waikouaiti, Otago, in 1800, Mr Orbed was educated at Cffnst's College. In ISSH he , was articled to Mr B. C. Haggitt, Crown Prosecutor, at Dunedin, and live years later was called to the Bar. He subsequently practised for a short time at Waimate and Ashburton respectively, and in 1595 went to Akaroa, whoie lie continued his profession as a partner in the firm of Messrs Beswick, Harris, and Orbell. In the same year he married a daughter of the Jate
Mr Jin nos Pilhrow, of Ashburton. Mr Orboll whs Mayor of Akaroa. from JanUiiilv, IUU.I, and remained in office until May, BJ0(3, during which term an era of progress was entered upon. Ho was instrumental in raising the waterworks loan of £'<l,2oo, for the construction of a reservoir, and the laying of water mains throughout the town. Another great advantage that the residents oi Akaroa have benefited by was the installation of the septic tank drainage system. Leaving Akaroa at vho end of 11)0(1, Mr Orbell went to Ashburton, where lie continued Ids practice until about eighteen months ago, when ho retired owing to failing health. New visitors to the Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs A. White (Manchester), Messrs S, B. Jenkins and H. J. Plankev (Sydney), Misses T. Hawkins, H. tfehenk, and Mr W. G. Beaumont (Auckland), Mr T. W. Moscrip (Gisborne), Messrs U. B. Donaldson and P. .Robertson (Wellington), and Mr J. 11. Wilson (Tawanni). Recent arrivals to the Excelsior Hotel include Mr and Mrs Chapman, Mr and Airs E. Thornwaite, Miss J. Bowden (Sydney), Mr and Mrs Paterson (Auckland), Mr and Airs Avaun, Mr J. Bennett, Mr B. Brice, Air G. H. Davis, Air J. A. Bertinshaw, Mr and Airs W. B.
