PORT CHALMERS REGATTA

ROWING, YACHTING, & MOTORING A VERY PLEASANT AFTERNOON Sunshine, smooth water, and good entries made the Port Chalmers regatta on Saturday afternoon pleasant and interesting. Color, movement, and the splash of salt water added zest and stimulated pleasure, 'trained athletes, expert yachtsmen, an., ‘fussy motor boats raced attractively. The big overseas steamer was gaily decorated with bunting, and from an elevated position on the vessel’s bridge deck the West Harbor Brass Banc, played very pleasingly. Spectators lined the wharves and applauded the winners. The oarsmen were accorded the maior portion of the programme. They rowed from a starting lino near Grassy Point and finished between the Bowen pier and the George street whan. -I he lighter Mcdora was anchored oti tho end of the George street wharf as flagship for tho rowing and motoring races. The course was down the harbor to Bonner’s and back again, the bigger races entailing several rounds Mr W. J. Wilson, as chairman tf the Regatta Committee, supervised the carrying out of the programme, raid his duties for the afternoon ii.clnded the welcoming of visitors. One of the visitors was Captain Middleton, who is recruiting for the Royal Naval Reserve. He was present by invitation, and volunteered to take tho place ol one of the rowing judges who was unable to attend. The other judges of rowing were Messrs P. J. Priest and W. Glengarry. Messrs C. Hook and A. Carrington judged the yachting and motoring; Mr C. 11. Caflin was umpire. The starters were Mr W. Lysaght (rowing) and Mr A. Giant (sailing and motoring). Mr A. Lindsay was handieapper for motoring, and Messrs A. Holden and A. Carrington for sailing. -, Tho timekeepers were Mr C R. Caflin for rowing and Mr A. Carrington for sailing and motoring Mr E. V. Fairbairn represented the New Zealand Rowing Association, the rowing races being carried out in conformity with the rules of that body. The I nvermurray, Knri, Eileen, Kia Ora, Othello, Doris, and Kismet competed in this race, but, failing to keep to the eonrsc, all the boats were disqualified, and each given a consolation prize of a case of benzine.
