At a meeting of the council Dr T. H. Valintinc (Director-General of Health) was elected an honorary life member of the association. Lectures on the ear, nose, and throat sections were completed. Mr T. Macgibbon (Christchurch) reviewed the diseases affecting tonsils, while diseases of tho heart were thoroughly dealt with by tho various sneakers. Dr F. Fitchett said that modern medical conception of heart disease was guided by a patient’s symptoms or feelings rather than by physical examination of the heart itself. Dr Mildred Starley and Mr J. A. Young (Minister of Health) were the guests at a luncheon by the Hamilton branch of the Howard League. Mr Young declared his sympathy with the league’s campaign for the care of the feeble-minded in nou-uenal institutions or by private guardians. The Minister stated that on his advice the Government sent Dr T. Gray (InspectorGeneral of Mental Hospitals) to Great Britain and other countries to investigate and report not only on the care and treatment of mental defectives, but on the feeble minded. Dr Gray had reported on tho latter, and the Minister hoped in the coming session to bring forward a Bill making for the better supervision of the lives of this unfortunate section of tho community.
