INTERPROVINCIAL BOWLING

REDPATH SHIELD CANTERBURY DEFEATS OTAGO The eighth match between Canterbury and Otago for the‘Redpnth Shield was played on the Roslyn Green yesterday afternoon, commencing at 2 o’clock and ending at 5.45, and Canterbury won for the third time, the score being 196 to 187 in its favor. Mr D. M. Fustier, president of the Dunedin Centre, spoke words of welcome to the visitors before play began. Ho said it gave the Otago howlers great pleasure to meet their Canterbury friends in contest for the provincial trophy. The Otago team was practically a complete representation, having in it players from North Otago and Central Otago. That was as it should be for an interprovincial contest, and it was hoped that all the Otago centres would be represented in future. The Dunedin players wore very pleased to welcome those from the country. He hoped that the teams would have a haupy and brotherly game, not allowing the question of winning or losing to interfere with the pleasure of the afternoon. Mr F. Good replied in appropriate terms. The game was of twenty-five heads. The green, though dull, played true and with a good draw each side. After the fifth head Otago led by 35-32, and after the tenth head by 75-72. Then Canterbury pulled up and took the lead, being 120-113 after the fifteenth head, 151-1.48 after the twentieth head, and finally winning by 196 to 187. Details arc as follow: C. O. L Munns. G. The play was singularly even, and nobody could prophesy the result with any certainty until twenty-four heads had been scored. But Canterbury came to light at the finish, Efford getting a 5 in the last head but one, and Finnegan scoring a 6 in the last head, this being the result of pure drawing and Raphael and Payne was give-and-take made its “pots” earlier. Hinchcliff got two s’s. The game between Raphael and Payne was give-and-take all the way. On the eleventh head the Cantorury side evened the score at 14 all by a nice bunch of 4, and thereafter Raphael held a lead ; but Payne managed to level again, and the question of which would win depended upon the two drives that Payne sent down. Both missed by a trifle. Slater’s team was composed of North Otago men. Mr J. 0. Whitelaw was the umpire. Mr J. Sutherland Ross, president of the Roslyn Club, was in attendance part of the afternoon, and he and his Roslyn colleagues did all they could to assist the centre’s officials (headed by Mr Pastier as president and Mr Hanning as secretary! to make things pleasant and fair for all concerned. M. Fustier (president of Dunedin Centre, proposed the touts of “The Victorious Canterbury Team.” He said that Otago players were very pleased to renew their iriendship with Canterbury bowlers. As regarded the game that day, it had been most enjoyable, and ho was sure that the large number on the bank had spent as pleasant a time as the players themselves. The game had been a close one, with the result in favor of Canterbury by a small number of points. This spoke well for them, for everybody knew that a visiting team was never at its full strength. ‘ The Otago team was a representative one, and they Had no excuses to offer for their defeat—they had been fairly beaten. The speaker could promise the Canterbury men that a really strong lot would be sent to Christchurch nest year in an endeavor lo bring the Redpath Shield once more to Dunedin, There could be no doubt that these interprovincial matches fostered the social side of the game, which was of more importance than the competitive side, after all. The toast was very heartily received. Mr EfTord (manager of the Canterbury team) replied. He said that naturally ho and his men were pleased with their win. They had had a good and thoroughly enjoyable game. Like most visiting teams they could not get their full strength away, hut fortunately Canterbury had proved strong enough to retain possession of the shield. He hoped that Otago would send their strongest men to Christchurch next year, when, undismayed by Mr Easticr’s threats, the home ' players would do their best, to keep possession of the shield. He paid Roslyn green a compliment, saying it was in splendid order, and reflected great credit- on the greenkeeper. The toast of “The Donor of the Shield” (Air J. A. Redpath) was proposed hy Mr C. J. Bayne and responded to hy Messrs E. Barnham and W. F. Raphael. Other toasts were “The Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association ” (proposed by Mr G. W. Smithson and responded to by Mr J. <H Marlow) and “The Dunedin Bowling Centre” (proposed by Mr F, J- Good (Christchurch) and responded to by Mr R. H. Todd. A varied programme filled in the intervals. _ Mr Miles contributed instrumental items Mr A. W. Martin told stories; Air J. Montague and Afr-W. F. Raphael (Canterbury) sang; and Air A H. Pcttitt played the piano accompaniments and gave two solos.
