George Wilfred Kidd, charged with leaving a car unattended for more than fifteen minutes, was defended by Mr J. B. Thomson, who pointed out that the ease was an unusual' one, the first of its kind which had come before the court. Defendant had parked his car in an authorised parking place, but was unaware of the regulation which forbade the leaving ol the cars immediately outside doorways.—Defendant was convicted. DRIVER A L LEG ED GY DRUNK. Hearing was continued of the charge against William Henry /oster of being drunk while in charge, of a motor car at Shag Point on October 21 ol last year. Defendant, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr C. J- U- White. Foster stated in evidence that he drove the car from Shag Point to the Oamaru races. It was true there was some beer in the ear, hut he did not know of it. At Hampden some soft drinks were bought, and witness had some. Ho had no drink at the laeo.s. On the way home, when Ross was driv—alter they had passed Wsiianakanm—the lights wont out. When witness saw that Ross was in trouble he climbed over the back seat. Instead of stopping the car Ross reversed it. and it wont backwards and turned over on its side. Witness climbed out as soon as ho could to see what had happened, and assisted to extricate Mrs Asquith, who was pinned down by the hood of tho car. Another car was secured, and Mrs Asquith was taken home, her husband saving she would bo all right in the morning. Witness righted his car, and secured petrol from a neighbor; hut the motor would not go. He had been driving for three years, and was not under the influence of liquor. To Sub-inspector Fahey: He did not know that shortly after starting three men had got into the car with a ogal keg of beer in a sack. At Hampden lie would not have a drink. Ho said he would have a soft drink. On tho return trip witness did not produce a bottle of whisky, although he believed there was one in the car. After Ross took the wheel witness sat with the Robinsons in the back seat. At Shag Point Ross left the wheel, Mr Asquith taking the wheel. Later he was forced to make a statement to the police. He was not a teetotaller, and might have got drunk at Christmas time. He had no drink on tho day of the accident. John Arthur Robinson, miner, said his brother, another man, and he go* into tho back of Foster’s car. They had a ogal jar containing about a gallon of beer. At Hampden Foster had a soft drink. Witness and his brother bad a bottle of whisky with them on
