SCHOOL BRASS BAND

CONCERT IN GARDENS All those present at the Botanical Gardens last evening to bear the Albany Street School Brass Band must have been greatly surprised by its playing and the great improvement, made since the hand’s hist public appearance. This was the first time the hand had given an open-air concert to raise money for its own use. and the result was very gratifying, for the jiuhlie treated the collection boxes most generously, and showed Dial such an organisation was worthy‘of support.

An attractive programme was arranged, and the buys, under the baton of Mr A. Hanmu played I lie vaiions selections in a manner winch held iho rapt attention of all pr-'sent from the opening March ‘Always Heady’ until the National Anthem. The manner in which the hoys taelm'd .some ni the rather ambitions selections was more than creditable, and earned them rounds of applause, faulty intonation was apparent at times, lint the work of the cornets more than counteracted this, and altogether, a good tone was produced. They played the marches with plenty of vim, and the clarity of tone displayed in the playing of the, popular 'Colonel IJogcy ’ and ‘Always Ready’ marches was highly commendable. ‘The Young Recruit’ and ‘ The Commandment ’ were other marches played with decided verve. ‘The Rosary,’ 'The Fantasia, L’Amonr,’ and ‘0 Sole Alin 5 were delightfully played, while the hymns ‘ Fierce Raged the Tempest ’ and ‘Nearer My God to Thee’ were exceedingly well treated. The preity walla ‘Pleasant Honrs’ was another piece played and loudly applauded.
