FLOWER SHOW
A SUCCESS IN EVERY WAY EXCELLENT EXHIBITS AND LARGE ATTENDANCE The executive of the Dunedin Horticultural Society had a happy experience yesterday over tho ilowor show in the Pioneer Hall, for exhibits of high quality came to hand freely in good time, exhibitors looked after tho staging promptly, the judges got to work without delay, and tho attendance in the evening was so numerous as to bring up tho cash takings for tho one day to as much as for the two days fast season. Amongst tho visitors was Mr Alistor Clark,'of Bulla, Victoria. The committee was particularly pleased with the linns’ competition, and the public; freely endorsed the opinion that the two displays put up reached a vetv Lgh standard, nob only in regal'd to the quality of the stuff shown, but also as to the artistic benching. The Plio.in; Company, who won first prize, was awarded tho Royal Horticultural Study's silver medal, and to Coulls, Somm illc, and Wilkie’s second prize was added the Royal Horticultural Society''-’ bronze medal—distinctions that are not handed round at random. The good quality of the gladioli, the vegetables, and the dahlias was written about in yesterday’s issue. Something more than there appeared is due to the sweet peas.
The Judge (Mr G. J. Erriugton) said it was pleasing to see so many new exhibitors of sweet peas coming forward and attaining .success. The fairly uniform quality in most of the classes was quite a feature, and augurs well for keen competition at future shows. The exhibits in the championships, both open and amateur, were up to a high level, and the competition between the first and second in the open class was a fairly close one, the winner gaining the verdict principally on color and length of stem. The exhibits staged in the amateur championship were also excellent, the blooms in tho winning collection being noticeably clean and uniform as to color and size of bloom. Tho following statement completes the prize list; —
