AMERICA’S FLEET

NEW CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME WASHINGTON, February 21. It is understood that as a result of tho executive session of the House Naval Affairs Committee a programme authorising the construction of fifteen cruisers, one aeroplane carrier, and possibly twenty-one submarines, involving a total outlay of 379,000,000 dollars, will probably be adopted. All the vessels are to be laid down within three years, and completed at the end of four. There may, however, be elimination of the submarine item, which would reduce the total cost to 274,000,000 dollars. It is expected that a decision will be reached by Thursday.
