‘SUSPENSE!’

A curious commentary on the story of 1 Suspense,’ the extraordinary play which opens its New Zealand lour at His Majesty’s Theatre next Monday evening, is that the author actually wrote the last act nine times before he was able to identify the sinister figure who moves silently through tho story, and who is responsible for an exciting six months in the life of Sir Peter Brace. Never departing Horn the probable, the author has developed a story of elaborate revenge, a story packed with interest, and bubbling with laughter. A master of technique, Wm. Graome-Holder is also a sympathetic student of humanity, and in all his plays the characters live. The scene m the second act of ‘ Suspense,’ when the autocratic Sir Peter Brace is forced to his knees by the silent machinations of the mysterious “ Ace of Diamonds,” and is compelled to accept a menial position in his own house, is at once tragedy and comedy. The picture of a proud spirit struggling against an irresistible force, the knowledge of personal guilt, and the final acceptance of the inevitable make ‘ Suspense ’ a fine play. It has always played to successul business, and is acknowledged a masterpiece of mystery. Never gruesome, depending neither on banging doors or howling winds, it nevertheless is thrilling to a degree, and with the principals from the cast of its original production forms one of the most interesting theatrical attractions. Box plans will open to-morrew (Thursday) morning. Students with the signature of recognised teachers may avail themselves of a special concession which awaits them for the first night’s performance.
