CORPORATION BUSES
EXCESSIVE SPEED ALLEGED That tho City Corporation buses were in some cases in the habit of travelling at excessive speed was a statement which formed the basis lor a discussion at last evening’s executive meeting or the Dunedin Ratepayers’ Association. The Secretary said that a ratepayer, who was also a member of the committee, had brought to his notice the excessive speed at wdiich corporation bus drivers were running their vehicles. A definite speed for buses was laid down by the heavy-traffic section of the Motor Vehicles Act, but speeds reaching in some cases 100 per cent, and in the main 75 per cent, ip excess of tho permissible speed were reached by practically every corporation bus. It had been stated to him also that tramwaymen, after a day’s work, undertook duty as bus drivers. Mr T. Stedman _s;tid that he had found buses travelling at a speed exceeding thirty miles per hour, which be considered dangerous for passengers and for those on tlic streets. Also, he believed that some of the motormen who worked on tho trams in tho daytime were running the buses in tho evening. Mr J. T. Cooper remarked that it was a matter for the tramways department.
Mr Sincock considered that there might ho something in the statement concerning speeding, but trannvayraoii might have been operating buses only when the Exhibition was on. Mr Stcdraan said that, speaking from personal knowledge, ho kiiew it was the case to-day. He instanced an occasion when ho had started in his car from Caversham at the same time as a bus, and although he took the short cut over Cemetery Rise, and the bus went around the other way. the other was ahead of him when he reached tho Oval.
“That should have been reported within an hour or two.” said Air Sincock. Mr A. E. Ansell stated that if they could lay a specific case before tho City Council they might gam their ends in the way of having the matter remedied; but they should not deal in generalities. On tho motion of Air Sincock it was resolved that the matter ho brought to tho notice of the Tramways Committee.
