ANNUAL CONFERENCE [Peb United Pbess Association ] WELLINGTON, February 21. The fourteenth annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers was opened to-day. The president (Mr G. J. M'Kenzie, Assistant Engineer-in-Chief to the Public Works Department) presided over an attendance of some 120 delegates. A hearty welcome was extended to the conference by the mayor (Mr G. A. Troup). The annual report showed that the total membership of the society was now 42" members—ordinary 211, honorary 1, associates 181, and students 34 —as against 418 for the previous rear, and 391 for 1925
With regard to tire suggested change in the name of the society to “The New Zealand Society of. Engineers,” the report stated that the members of the council were practically unanimous in their disapproval of the suggestion. On the motion of Mr S. A. R. Mair (FJunterville) it was decided to take a plebiscite of members, and in so doing to forward to members a copy of the opinion given by the council, and also a full report of the debate. It was decided to hold next conference in Christchurch. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr F. E. De Guerrier (Auckland); vice-president, Mr J. G. Alexander; hon. secretary. Mr R. W. Holmes; council—Messrs F. W. Furkort, .F. T. M. Kissell. F. C. Widdop, E. A. Shrimpton. and J. Burnett. Mr J. A. Paterson (Wellington) was elected a life member.
