GERMAN POLITICAL CRISIS
SHELVED FOR TIME BEING BERLIN, February 19. An arrangement enabling tho Reichstag to enjoy the carnival holiday solved the crisis, and the House has adjourned till February 27.
President Hindenburg again announced that he opposes dissolution, and hinted that if Cabinet fell a business Ministry might be appointed to complete the urgent business of the emergency programme, which should be completed by the end of March, unless the collapse of the emergency scheme necessitates earlier dissolution and polling.
[From the international standpoint it is regarded as unfortunate (said a previous message), that a domestic quarrel
now divides Dr Marx and Dr Stresemann, who’so admirably collaborated on the policy of reconciliation, but, although the coalition is declared to be dead the Cabinet is busily drafting a programme which may delay its funeral for a month or two. The People’s Party, indeed, protests that the Education Bill was not the sole reason for the formation of the coalition; consequently disbandment was unjustified. The party proceeds to blame the Catholic Centre Party, whose “ exaggerated demands for denominational education would undermine the State’s authority over schools.” While the situation is delicate, it is considered possible that a General Election may not occur before May.]
