AMERICAN NAVAL PROGRAMME
ENTIRELY ONE OF REPLACEMENT WASHINGTON, February 19. Mr F. A. Britten, a member of Congress, predicts that the House Naval Affairs Committee will agree on a replacement budding programme. He says the Bill will probably provide for twenty-five cruisers to replace twentytwo obsolete ships, five aircraft carriers, and thirty-five submarines, all to be completed by 1936. “Tho programme before us,” he says, “is almost entirely one of replacement. I believe our annual deep-sea commerce of 20,000,000,000d0l fully justifies the precautions which this programme will provide.” Mr Britten points out that tho Bill will not provide for destroyer leaders, but the Navy Department may later request appropriations for nine such vessels.
