GEORGE STREET FIRE
OUTBREAK IN HOSIERY SHOP A 'o;iII about 6 o'clock last flight brought the City Fire Brigade to the promises of the London Town Hosiery Parlors in George street, where an outbreak of fire had occurred. The brigade got quickly to work, and the damage was confined to the parlors. Such damage was serious enough, however, for, though the premises are not particularly large, the stock was heavy, and, so far as could ho ascertained this morning, £I,OOO will scarcely cover the loss. The manager of the parlors, Mr 11.I 1 . J. Shepherd, states that when he left the shop for a few minutes last evening everything was all right, hut when ho returned the hack premises were nil re. It is surmised that the outbreak originated from a gas ring that was burning on a bench. The stock and fittings were insured for £3,600—£2,800 with the_ South British Company, and £BOO with the Phrcnix Company. The block of buildings of which the shop forms a part is insured with the Queensland Office for £3,300.
