FORTNIGHTLY MEETING Tiio meeting lust night was attended by Crs Scollay (in the chair), Allan, Hell, Craigic. Willinott, Love, Smitw, and Lunu. CORRESPONDENCE.

E, Basiro wrote: “May 1* be permitted to ask if something can bo done in our town to keep dogs from wandering about the streets as they are doing at present. A young woman wheeling a pram down George street found herself in the midst of a dog fight. Eotrunately the child was m the pram. The woman’s shoes and apparel were damaged, apart from the fright sustained. 1 ’ —It was resolved to destroy dogs without collars or dogs with collars habitually straying about the streets, notice of same to be displayed outside the town clerk’s office. The Hospital Board advised that during January two patients were admitted to the local cottage hospital, and three discharged.—Received.

REPORTS. The Works Committee reported: During the past fortnight the foreman and staff have been engaged on general maintenance work. Advantage is being taken of tiie warm weather to push on with .tarring and sanding; George street is being treated at the present time, the work being carried out with the new lar sprayer. The sides of Mount street where weeds were chipped have been sprayed with a coat of tar to keep down \yecd.s. It is believed that tins procedure will not only give the street a much cleaner appearance, hut a saving in maintenance costs should also lie effected. The cutting of grass in the streets has been completed, and cleaning of channels is being proceeded with, tiie following streets having been cleaned: —Grey street, Scotia street, Slant street, and Henry street. The Public Works Department is still engaged on Macandrew road, and a further .'47 loads of rock were obtained and spread on the Low road..—The report was adopted

The Gas and Water Committee reported :—At the gasworks everything is working satisfactorily. One new service lias been put in during the fortnight and one authorised. The committee has looked into the question of finding a competent man to relieve the gas manager during his holidays, and as a suitable man is available it is recommended that he be employed at £8 IDs per week, including expenses. Up to the present the reservoir has been bolding well, a slight drop only having been shown during the dry spell. The committee lias instructed the fo'reman to renew all old water services in the south end of George street before the street is paved.—ln reply to questions, the Chairman of the Committee said that the manager had recommended that the stoker take his place during the holidays, but the committee had, in accordance with council’s wishes, recommended an experienced man.—The report was adopted. The Finance Coniinilce drew the attention of the council to tiie unsatisfactory state of affairs in connection with dog registrations. Out of twentyfive dog license fees collected by the collector fourteen were at full rate and eleven at the half-crown rate. In regard to the latter the collector was paid 2s 6d each—the full amount collected—the council not only receiving none of the fee, but having, in addition, to provide collars costing 9d each. Claims for the lower rate would henceforth be carefully scrutinised. Out of the sixtyeight dogs registered at the office fourteen were at the lower rate and the balance at full rate. The expenditurejn the general account amounted to £516 16s lUd and the receipts to £l2O 17s lid. In the gasworks accounts the expenditure toallcd £2B 11s 4d and the receipts £9B 15s sd, leaving a debit balance of £441 2s 3d.—Cr Smith said that owners of plots should be required to keep them clear of grass and _ weeds.— During a discussion on dog licenses it was stated that there was a heavy penalty for false declarations in regard to the* use of a dog.—'file report was adopted. The council decided to meet at i .30 during, the winter months.
