RETURNED SOLDIERS’ CHOIR

The annual meeting of tho above choir was held yesterday at the club rooms, when the eighth annual report was read and adopted. There was a good attendance of members, and many matters of interest were discussed, the most pleasing being the particularly good financial position of the choir. After payment of all liabilities, a substantial credit balance was reputed with which to start the new jear.^ Addressing the members, the Chairman (Mr P. S. Anderson) stated that the eonera I opinion was that the standard of performance had greatly improved and this was due mainly to the ability of the conductor, Mr J. T. Leech, who has at all times given ungrudgingly of his best in the interests of tho choir. The chairman added that thanks wore also due to tho pianist, Mr James, for the highly efficient services he has rendered. During the past year the choir, besides giving the three subscribers’ concerts, had given concerts outside the district —namely, at Gore, Waikouaiti, and Mosgiel, while the sanatorium at Wakari and tho Montecillo Homo had also been visited. Special mention was made in the report of all those who had assisted the choir at its concert, and particularly of those who, at some inconvenience to themselves, had travelled with the choir on its visits. The Girl Guides were also deserving of special mention for the work they had done in tastefully decorating the stage for each concert.. It was stated by one member that some of the subscribers were a little lax in the payment of their subscriptions, and there was a fairly considerable sum outstanding on this account. Mention was also made of the very great help the Press had given the choir. The concerts were always faithfully reported, and the thanks of the choir were due to both papers for the courteous treatment received. Mr Leech slated that, while he was particularly pleased with tho improvomcni shown by tho choir, he intended to make this coming year an outstanding one, not only, in regards to an improvement in singing, hut in the production of new partsongs which had not been previously heard in Dunedin. Tho following officers Wore elected for the Tea , President, Colonel J. H. Moir; hon. conductor, Mr J. T. Leech; lion, pianist, Mr Len. James; committee—Messrs P. S. Anderson, A. Smith, P. Pinfold, and H. L. Paterson; librarian, Mr H. H. White; treasurer, Mr J. M. White; secretary, Mr P. F. Havre.
