IYA ENGINEER RESIGNS

LISTENERS' REGRET [Special to the ‘ Star.’] AUCKLAND, February 17. Tho Auckland ‘Star’s’ radio writer to-day states: “IYA must hold a record for short term engagements of its staff that will challenge comparison anywhere. -The latest resignation from the ranks of those who control the different activities of the local station is that of Mr J. Orbcll, B. Sc., M. 1., R.E., who has been engineer m charge of the plant. It is to be regretted, from the listeners’ point of view, that Mr Orbell has ‘turned in the job, for he is without doubt the most capable, most experienced, and most useful man on the technical staff of the broadcasting company. His work and his _ experiments m the amateur transmitting field alone have earned him a reputation that extends beyond New Zealand, and there are hound to be other broadcasting concerns outside New Zealand who will bid for his services at a higher salary than the far from tempting one offered here. Listeners owe Mr Orbell a debt of gratitude for many innovations and improvements for which, on the technical side of transmissions, he has been directly responsible. They will wish him well in another field. Meanwhile, the plant at IYA is being run by Mr Halcrow, who was sent up to relieve Mr Orbell while the latter went on holiday. , _ , “ It is freely stated that Mr Orbell s resignation will be followed very soon by that of Mr Trevor Stringer, the station director. The loss of two such capable officials as those mentioned is a matter of concern to local listeners, who may be experimented upon to tho detriment of their evening and afternoon entertainment. All who have the welfare of broadcasting at heart would wish enlightenment, for these happenings are more than the mere concern of tho N.Z.R.B.C.
