KEENEST COMPETITION
WELLINGTON WOOL SALES BUYERS FORGED TO LIMITS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 16. The fourth Wellington wool sale of the season opened to-night. The catalogu comprises 27,134 bales, of which 10,134 were sold to-night. From the beginning there was the keenest competition, a great deal coming from the Continent, while Bradford and America kept the first-named up to their limits. Fine wools were in particularly good demand, and prices were occasionally 2d higher than last month. A certain amount of irregularity was shown, but all wools felt the influence of the demand, and lower grades were Id and sometimes more dearer. A feature of the sale was the keen demand from France for lambs’ wool and skirtings. DEAREST SALE THIS SEASON FINE WOOLS ADVANCE FURTHER WELLINGTON, February 17. “ The sale is the dearest so far held in this country,” said Mr 11. G. Anderson, chairman of the Wellington Woolbrokers’ Association, on the wool sale opened last night. Among those present wore Mr Coates, Mr M’Leod, and Mr Williams. There were buyers from all the woollen manufacturing countries, including Russia and Japan. “ A pronounced feature of the sale,” continued Mr Anderson, “is the spirited bidding and keen competition. It is apparent that the hunger for wool is still unappeased. In most sales it is generally one or two buyers who make the market, but to-day every section of the trade is co-operating in making a splendid sale. Practically nothing is passed because of failure to meet reserves. As compared with the January rates, I estimate that prices will be advanced Id to 2d on fine wools, and Id to l£d on other descriptions.”
