UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

m COATES'S CB-BRDI NATION EFFORT POSTMASTERS TO CANVASS THEIR DISTRICTS [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 17. “Certain instances have come under my notice recently where private local effort has been responsible in quit© a number of instances for the establishing of men in certain classes of employment, and the Government appreciates what has been done in this connection,” said the Premier to-day. “I feel there must be a good deal of labor required in the country, particularly at the present time, and any farmer who engages labor will greatly assist in reducing the ranks of the unemployed. In order to facilitate matters so far as prospective employers are concerned, arrangements are being made for postmasters throughout the dominion to get into communication with all settlers in their district, and ascertain whether any labor is required. Postmasters will then advise the nearest Labor bureau of the requirements in the districts, and the department will arrange the necessary transport facilities for the men engaged.” Mr Coates hopes that the appeal will meet with ready response, and thereby assist the Government in reducing the number of unemployed. Mr Coates indicated that registration, where there is no labor bureau, is to be at Post Offices, not at police stations.
