In striking contrast to the great German bid is the position of the British Olympic athletes, thirteen of the most noted performers of 1924 broadcasting a Press appeal for funds to allow a worthy team to participate. They say it would be idle to pretend that Britain expects to bo always on top in sport, but those interested are anxious that it should be represented at the Olympic Games. “The best men and women m other countries have been given Government subsidies. Champions like Peltzer, Kocrnic, and Honben are competing in sprints and middle distances, supported by 65 men and 20 women in light athletics and 40 swimmers. Germany will be well represented in heavy athletics, hockey, football, fencing, cycling, rowing, boxing, and gymnastics. The women’s contingent totals 276.] OAKLEY NOMINATED The Wairarapa Amateur Athtletic Sub-centre has recommended to the New Zealand Council the nomination of T. Oakley, cyclist, for inclusion in the New Zealand Olympic team.
