AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS

MATCH AGAINST NELSON KIPPAX OPENS TOUR WITH CENTURY [Per United Press Association.] NELSON, February 16. The match against the Australians, concluded to-day, ended in a draw. The weather was perfect and the wicket, which played well throughout, was faster than on the first day. The crease was occupied all day by the visitors, who were evidently more concerned with obtaining practice than with winning. Ponsford and Kippax, who resumed the innings, quickly got going, and the rate of scoring was considerably faster than on the first day. The partnership produced 194 runs by excellent cricket, which was a treat to watch. The century appeared in 96min. Ponsford was the first to go, being caught at square leg after making 86. Kippax went soon 'after with the first century of the tour to his credit. The only chance each gave was early in tne innings. Both were at the crease for about 2| hours. Richardson proved a strong, crisp hitter, while Schneider, despite his lack of size, gave a most attractive display. Grimmett and Jackson knocked the howling about and established a good partnership for the seventh wicket. The fourth century was hoisted after 4-J hours’ play. The innings closed at 5.50 for 472 runs for nin wickets. The Nelson bowling lacked variety, but the fielding was excellent, the catches taken all being on the difficult side.
