PART-TIME TEACHERS
INADEQUATE PAY SOME CAUSTIC CRITICISM [Special to tub ‘ Stab.’] ' • • AUCKLAND, February 16. The position of part-time teachers and their remuneration was subjected to some criticism at to-day’s meeting of the Technical School Board. The question was raised by Miss Carnachan, who endeavored to have a previous motion in regard to the scale rescinded. In the course of the discussion, it was pointed out by Mr J. A. C. Allum that certain part-time teachers appearing on the list were City Council employees. According to a regulation of that body, employees were required to give their whole time to the city’s interests. They could not take outside work without the consent of the council. Mr H. Dearsley: That’s not our business. If the council has rules the council itself should enforce them, not leave it to ns. Mr Allum; The Government doesn’t permit such a practice, docs it? Mr R. F. Barter said a headmaster of a school had been receiving part-time work from the Technical Board. Mr Dearsley remarked that the Technical Board was not in a position to engage permanent teachers for specified work, and it was thus necessary to secure the services of instructors employed elsewhere during the day, because the salary offered by the board would not suffice to keep them. Some caustic criticism was then levelled by Mr Allum on the scale of remuneration. He quoted from the list, which showed that manual workers were receiving better pay than teachers holding degrees, and ho thought, it significant that there were reductions in the salaries of several teachers with M.A. and B.A. degrees, while there were increases to manual instructors. The Principal (Mr C. J. Park) observed that the remuneration was fixed according to the number of pupils in a class. Miss Carnachan’s motion was defernd for a month, and it was decided meantime to inquire what rates were being paid at Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
